Leafs and Blues talking trade? Might be time for “much needed and anticipated” changes in Calgary

  • Andy Strickland of True Hockey: Sources in Toronto have the Blues and Maple Leafs on each other’s radar. Nikolai Kulemin’s name keeps coming up. Kulemin may need a change of scenery. He’s taken a defensive/penalty killing role and gets limited power play time. The Maple Leafs could be interested in a younger player which may include Jaden Schwartz and/or Ian Cole. If the Blues were to move Cole, they would need a defenseman in return, and the Leafs have a surplus of them. It would take more than Kulemin if they were to get Schwartz out of St. Louis.
  • Randy Sportak via twitter: After not getting Ryan O’Reilly, it might be time for the “much needed and anticipated” changes.

We all know what that means, with the usual highly paid suspects — pending unrestricted free-agent Jarome Iginla, along with Miikka Kiprusoff and Jay Bouwmeester — in the sights as trade fodder to kickstart a much-needed rebuild of the team.

The Flames should be looking for young talent and top picks.

How’d the Steen trade work out TML’s?

I don’t think Schwartz is the type of center the Leafs need. He’s just not the best skater. They need a guy who is clear-cut better than Bozak.

doesnt a potential trade involving the blues have more to do with the blues having 3 nhl level goalies? maybe something is brewing w/ elliot or halak.

w/ that said, the blues also have a glut of rfa’s and ufa’s after this year is done… potential for a 4+ player deal here…

Kulemin has been valuable for the Leafs in a defensive role while at the same time creating some nice plays in front of the net. A defensive defenseman (Cole) is not what the Leafs need seeing as they have three in Kostka, Fraser, and Holzer who are all playing well right now, as well as Komisarek on the bench. As for Schwartz, the Leafs don’t need a small, young skill-guy either. Frattin and Lupul will be back soon to provide some much needed offence. In response to hotwings, above, the Leafs also do not need a goalie–particularly with the recent performance of Scrivens in Reimer’s stead. I maintain that Reimer is an all-star calibre goalie who needs a little more time to fluorish. The only thing the Leafs need right now, and they need it badly, is a veteran–and not just any veteran, an older guy (eg. 34-35) who can still produce. The biggest problem the Leafs have is mental mistakes. They need a guy who, along with being a quality player, does not make those often. Preferably, he would be a two-way forward. Otherwise, they have a good young core with an ability to score, strong defence, and good goaltending with high potential.
To trade Kulemin for either of these aforementioned players would be grossly unnecessary and would provide no boon for a team which is currently playing well for the first time in seven years.

Nonis has went on record about acquiring a more established netminder… i can see his point, because they are both so young and have less than 100 nhl games between them… also, with reimer’s concussion issues… i think Nonis is just trying to shore up the position and be responsible as a GM… i agree that both scrivs and reims have been really impressive this year…

they need a #1 centre more than anything… maybe they trying to pry oshie or berglund out of st louis… st louis seems to have a glut of centres… i agree i dont think they would be interested in schwartz or cole… but who knows, maybe 2 d are going to st louis, and they are taking 1 + something else back…

i think they have that 2-way vet in the way of jay mcclement…

the only way i see a trade with kuli to st Louis is if its for stewart. i could see a big trade going down for stewart and bergland.

    JVR – Bergland – Kessel
    Lupul -Kadri – Frattin
    Stewart – Grabo – Komarav
    MClaren/Brown – Mcclement – Orr

Like the Leafs need Schwartz, hes barely tall enough to see over the boards when hes on the bench. The need a big centreman not a smurf.
