Sunday morning rumors and injuries: the Lightning, Canadiens, Weber, van Riemsdyk, Koivu, Skinner, DiPietro and NHL Sources Say Video

  • Erik Erlendsson of the Tampa Tribune: Lightning goalies Dwayne Roloson and Mathieu Garon have a combined GAA of 3.37. Some want the Lightning to trade for Evgeni Nabokov or Antero Niittymaki, or any other goalie who’ll be a UFA at the end of the year. Minor league goalie Dustin Tokarski is playing well in the AHL, but he’s not the answer right now. Trading for guys like Cory Schneider or Jonathan Bernier usually don’t happen during the season, and would cost a significant player/prospect and a high draft pick. In the offseason they could also look at free agent goalies like Brian Elliott and Josh Harding.
  • Toronto Sun: The Canadiens may not be done dealing. Defenseman Hal Gill has seen his ice time decrease as of late and may interest a cup contender who is looking for a big stay at home Dman. Forwards Travis Moen and Andrei Kostitsyn will be UFAs at the end of the season. Defenseman Yannick Weber may get some interest someone who is looking to boost their PP.
  • Randy Miller via twitter: Miller thinks it may cost the Flyers James van Riemsdyk, Sean Couturier and a top pick for Predators defenseman Shea Weber. The Preds would be aiming for that.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk is out with a concussion. “James was hit in the head in each of our last two games,” Holmgren said in a statement.  “He reported yesterday  not feeling like himself.  He will be out indefinitely with a concussion.”
  • Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune: Wild center Mikko Koivu left last night’s game in the 1st period after taking a hit from Blues forward Vladimir Sobotka. Koivu appears to have a left shoulder injury. He left the arena with a sling on.
  • Brian Compton via twitter: Islanders Rick DiPietro is expected to miss 10 weeks after his sports hernia surgery. His knee also has swelling.
  • NHL Sources Say: Talk on next year’s Winter Classic, All-Star game captains and fantasy draft, Blues ownership situation, the Oilers rink situation, and Zach Parise.

Haha, maybe if they got Weber with annual cap hit of 3,5mil for the next 10 years and Austin Watson + Michael Latta. VanRiemsdyk, Couturier and a top pick for a chance to sign him? Holmgren knows better especially after that Hamhuis episode. Of course Nashville is going to demand more if trade is going to happen at the deadline and philly is superserious of winning the stanley. At the draft the price is max. 1st round pick for a chance to sign him. Weber, he decides where he wants to play. He is in that kind of a position (every team in the league wants him almost no matter what) that trading for him to get negotiating rights probably wont work.

Weber is not a UFA. He is RFA.

Re: Hall Gill, I’ve always been a fan.

Oh yeah Jeff, just checked from capgeek myself.
That changes things, still, awfully steep price to pay. If Philly pays that price and Weber doesn’t fit that well into their system they can say goodbye to stanley. Not enough firepower up front.

I think a healthy Weber is a top 7 player in the NHL, and is the kind of player that carries you to the Cup Finals. I hope he doesn’t get traded to Philly.

Whatever Holmgren does will be the right move. He is genius.

With all this talk of Van Reims having one or more concussions, I definitely wouldnt want to part with Luke Schenn… The rampancy of concussions has really turned the whole business of trading players into an exercise for spooks.

I think if you are Philly, you have to be gunning for ryan suter. You would have to be cautious of getting another #1 d man with concussion problems.

Nashville MAY get a lot of assets back if they can part with weber or suter — BUT theyre d would seem to be a little weak.. especially after getting rid of Franson to the leafs this past season… But if they can play their cards right, then they could possibly be the fifth powerhouse in the west (detroit, chicago, san jose, van)…

i hope montreal has a firesale and can get rid of some dead weight… they need to burn, destroy and rebuild a bit the next few years…

I thought the Habs should rebuild a few years ago, and then they made a long run in the playoffs two years ago.

But you are right, they sure have some work to do to turn things around.

    Return of Scotty Bowman?

montreal is a circus… i think don cherry and some others were trying to play down some of the things that went on their recently.. but the crap that has been going down there is bush league… montreal wasnt a prime destination to start with for any free agent, but now you have the pierre gauthier element to deal with.

Like in Calgary and Montreal, it takes some time to get through all the bad contracts. Like Bouwmeester and Gomez for example.

Who would be the next best choice for GM post in Montreal? Not many i think if they only want french speaking guys. Did Gainey speak any french?

  10. #10 by Jeff at January 15th, 2012

    Patrick Roy!

Montreal will never win so long as they believe that they must have french management, coaches, and players (though this one has tamed over the last couple years).

This mentality prohibits them from having the better minds in the game.

    Luc Robitaille?
