Flyers – Leafs rumors … Sens could be buyers … Flyers like Suter … Backstrom to IR … Zajac shut down … Starting goalies

  • Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers Don Luce (Director of Player Development) was seen scouting the Maple Leafs for the 3rd time in as many weeks. Cue the trade speculation. The Flyers are in the market for a defenseman, a position the Leafs have some depth. Luke Schenn has seen his minutes decrease this year to 16:36 from 22:22 last year. Luke carries a $3.6 million cap hit and has 4 years remaining after this season. Cody Franson would also be an option, and would be cheaper. Chirs Botta via twitter: Botta mentions Brayden to Toronto. Dustin Leed via twitter: Leed doesn’t see a Schenn for Schenn deal happening.
  • Pierre LeBruna and Scott Burnside of ESPN: Senators GM Bryan Murray said this morning that he’d look to add at the trade deadline if they continue to play well. “Yes, if we continue to get wins over the next month or so, you want to give your players the best chance you can,” Murray said. They will still focus on the long-term stability and building through youth. “We’d probably be looking for a forward,” Murray said. LeBrun spoke with Predators defenseman Ryan Suter’s agent yesterday who said things are status quo. The Flyers have Suter as their #1 target if he becomes available.
  • Dan Rosen via twitter: The Capitals have put Nicklas Backstrom on the IR to make room for call-up Tomas Kundratek. Backstrom can be taken off the IR at any point. Tarik El-Bashir via twitter: Capitals coach Dale Hunter said there is no timetable on Backstrom and Mike Green.
  • Katie Strang via twitter: Islanders defenseman Calvin de Haan will be out for 4 to 6 weeks with a left shoulder injury.
  • Allen Panzeri via twitter: Craig Anderson will start in net for the Senators against the Rangers. Erik Karlsson didn’t practice today but is expected to play.

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing a Cody Franson trade for Brayden Schenn. I like Cody Franson don’t get me wrong, he has been a good young defence player with good offense skills for Toronto, but if we could reunite Schenn brothers in Toronto, Brayden is young and Luke is with us for 4 more years. Both I think would be great assets as defence and foward for the next few years to come.

The other trade I would love to see is either Getzlaf or Parise come to Toronto!! Praying to the Hockey Gods, but a trade has to happen soon. The suspense is killing me.

As for Toronto Goaltending. Gustavsson is doing a great job right now for us and I have confidence in Reimer to get his game back, after the concussion like symptoms..

A veteran Goalie would be nice.. but from what is available the only one I personally would love to see come to Toronto is Martin Brodeur. Even if he’s from Montreal.. and Even if he would only be around for the last few years before retirement OR Ryan Miller. I think Ryan Miller needs a new scenery and Toronto may just be the place go to. They do say that Buffalo has more Toronto fans anyway.. hahaha!!
    GO LEAFS GO!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Too bad that Staal trade was all talk..

@TDOT1985 umm im sorry dude, but getting rid of Franson would be completely idiotic. Im not sure if you’ve noticed this but the leafs are one of the worst on the pk and there Defence has been sub par this year. They have been better the last 4 games but you do not trade a great Dman for another young unproven defenseman just because you think it would be cool to have two brothers on one team…
As for wanting Brodeur… your on crack! the guy is 40 years old and im not sure if you’ve noticed but he is having a terrable career, his time is up. Up until the lockout in 2004 Toronto was notorious for signing has beens on there last legs of there careers. They do not want Marty. The Monster is young, he is the type of goalie who =could be a top goalie in the nhl in the next few years like his country mate lundquivst…. The Monster stays…

If Toronto needs anything it is another center to play on the top line with kessel and lupul. Torontos 2nd 3rd and 4rth lines are great as they are… We have enough depth in the marlies system to make a move with prospects for a bobby ryan or getzlaf…

How are the Flyers at the C position? Maybe the Leafs can make a package that includes Grabovski as a rental..

    Grabovski
Franson/Liles (if healthy any time soon)
    1st or 2nd-round pick

    For

    Brayden Schenn
    Low-round pick

  4. #4 by hotwings at January 11th, 2012

@wunschkind…i think that deal is a bit generous on the leafs side.. i would put franson as one of the most attractive young and possibly available d-men in the league at the moment..

i like franson a lot, but i think it would be better for the leafs in the long term, to grab the other schenn brother in a trade… maybe something like…

    Tor: franson+pick/prospect
    Phi: b.schenn..

the flyers are somewhat good at the c position.. briere/cotourier/m.talbot/b.schenn .. and i think giroux plays centre?

im wondering though if it makes more sense for philly to go after a more veteran d man like bryan allen out of carolina, since they are gonna have a decent shot at the cup this year..

  5. #5 by Wunschkind89 at January 11th, 2012

For the Leafs it would have to be a pretty good prospect. Is Franson an RFA? If so, that increases his value.

  6. #6 by spirit of 67 at January 12th, 2012

If toronto trades some D to philly,

    then watch

    to Montreal
    Lombardi

    to Toronto
    Hal Gill ( again )

  7. #7 by spirit of 67 at January 12th, 2012

    phily is looking for Dmen…

    I think it will be…

    to phil.
    Phanuef, Aulie(or Gunnerson)

    to Toronto
    Schenn, Van Riemsdyke( or coutourier)

don’t bug me about spelling ..!

watch for Burke to have to take back Hartnells’ salary, and then throw philly a 1st rounder to make this happen…

    This is a win/ win trade/

    @spirit of 67

are you crazy? toronto would never trade away their captain, he’s the heart of the team. aulie wouldnt be traded either, he’ll be a solid shutdown dman in years to come.

    to Philly
    Grabovski, Franson/Gunnarson, 1st

    to Toronto
    B. Schenn, 2nd

everyone knows burkey would love to unite the schenn brothers in the nhl, and he wants to make an impact trade. schenn will grow and in a few years he will be a solid top-6 forward.

  9. #9 by spirit of 67 at January 12th, 2012

Braydon Schenn is the least part of this trade, and he won’t help them for a few years.

The captain, is as expendable as anyone else…and Burke will consider selling while his value is high…

    Leafs have plenty of Dmen…

Dion and Gunnerson will bring the biggest return,
Dion and Aulie will be almost as good…

What Leafs need are some young solid goal scorers…
and you have to give up something to get something…

Philly will make an offer Burke can’t refuse…
and Toronto will have a new captain.

i have to agree, that there is no way they would trade phaneuf. they have been having an excellent season so far, and i think a lot of that has to do with phaneuf’s leadership qualities and making this team gel in the dressing room.

aulie and gunnar could be trade bait.. but i think franson is the most likely guy to be traded, as i think he lands the biggest return…

grabo is a ufa next year, and although im a grabo fan… if parise has to be traded, then i think grabo could be headed to jersey in part of a package to land parise…

    i could see
    tor: franson + 2nd
    phi: b.schenn

Burke was on am 590 yesterday ar 6pm. He said a few things that he’s planing on trading Kadri or Schenn, and he said we only have 2 draft picks 1st round and 2nd round (which he plans on keeping)

The players I can see the Leafs trading are:
Mike Komiserek (6.5 million cap gap)
    Keith Aulie
    Cody Franson
    Joe Colbourne
    Phillipe Dupuis
    Gunnarson
    Or even maybe Kuliemin

If a Franson for Brayden Schenn isn’t enough I don’t see a pick being added to leave leafs with one pick. Maybe Franson+Dupuis to Philly and to Toronto Bradyen Schenn+3rd to 5th pick.

I can see Komiserek+Colborne+_______ being traded for a center. But depending on to which team and which center. Komiserek holds almost 6 million in cap space for us.

I can’t see Burke trading our captain. Especially now that Phaneuf got voted 1st most over rated player in the sports illustraded nhl player poll. I also don’t see him trading Kessel or Lupul obviously. But Grabovski.. He’s UFA after this season.. And with Grabo I hope for a 2-3 year extrention!!

As long as I see that list of players traded I won’t be to upset nor surprized. But I think we’ll see something very soon. A trade hopefully after the new york game on this saturday.

  12. #12 by Mark Easson at January 12th, 2012

I’d be surprised is anyone would want Komisarek … He has 2 more years at $4.5 million.

I sure the Flyers wouldn’t trade Schenn for Franson and a pick … They gave up Mike Richards to get Schenn and 3rd line winger Simmonds (I’m like Simmonds but he’s not really a top 6 guy). Schenn is a still a top prospect.

I’ve wondered this for a couple years … If the Leafs never had Luke, would there be so much love for Brayden?

  13. #13 by Dave at January 12th, 2012

    @ Mark Easson

You’re right there wouldn’t be the hype for Brayden, but his game will always speak for itself. Just like his world jr performance the kids got game, but as usual the NHL hype machine is in full effect.

So I’d say his true value lies somewhere in between where his game is now and where the expectations placed upon him are (minimum top 6, maybe top 2 forward in his prime). Question now is what does Philly realistically want if they were to trade him?

  14. #14 by Dave at January 12th, 2012

And Brayden Schenn should be available now that Couturier has established himself as a keeper along with Giroux etc. When the Flyers traded for B.Schenn they honestly didn’t think Couturier would drop to them at #8 in the draft.

The Flyers have a ton of depth down the middle now and a glaring need on D now that Pronger’s out. It would be in there best interest to at least listen to offers on B.Schenn and JVR. I’m sure Franson, Aulie and Gunnarsson as part of a package all qualify but is that enough in the Flyers eyes…..

  15. #15 by Dave at January 12th, 2012

And i should specify that it’s one out of Franson, Aulie or Gunnarsson as part of a package for Schenn or JVR, not all 3 together.

  16. #16 by hotwings at January 12th, 2012

@dave good point on last years draft… regardless of the richards trade, i think it makes sense for the flyers to shed some of their centre depth for what they need. maybe picking up franson and his power play prowess makes a lot of sense.. i just hope that nashville can resign suter, so the flyers come calling on burke’s phone..
